Magnesium Oxide

Introduction

Magnesium oxide (formula: MgO) is an oxide of magnesium, an ionic compound. It is a white solid at room temperature. Magnesium oxide exists in nature in the form of square magnesite and is the raw material for smelting magnesium.

Classification

1. Magnesium oxide is a white, amorphous powder with a loose volume. Odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic. Soluble in acid, ammonium salt solution, difficult to dissolve in pure water and organic solvents after high temperature burning into crystals. The carbon dioxide in the air forms magnesium carbonate, or double salt.

2. Dead-burned magnesium oxide is a compact white or beige powder. Easy to combine with water, easy to absorb moisture and carbon dioxide in exposed air, easy to gel and harden when mixed with magnesium chloride solution.
