Kieserite fertilizer (magnesium sulfate) is a white powder or granule. Kieserite provides a highly concentrated form of two essential plant nutrients, Mg and S. Since kieserite applications have no major effect on soil pH, it can be supplied to all kinds of soil, irrespective of soil pH.

Kieserite fertilizer is commonly used prior to or during the growing season to meet the nutrient requirements of crops. Due to its high solubility, it can be used to supply both Mg and S during peak periods of crop demand. Since kieserite is an earth mineral mined from naturally occurring deposits, it is permitted as an organic nutrient source by some organic certifying agencies.

The increase in yield by applying kieserite fertilizer is related to the content of exchangeable magnesium in the soil. According to the symptoms of Mg deficiency in the tested forage, the reference critical value of Mg deficiency was 0.15% of dry matter in the shoot. Livestock eating forage with a magnesium content of less than 0.2% are prone to grassland spasms.

It was also reported that when the exchangeable magnesium in soil was less than 44 mg/kg, the exchangeable magnesium saturation (the percentage of exchangeable magnesium in cation exchange capacity) was about 5.0%. When the magnesium content in the rice plant was about 0.13%, yellow leaf disease in rice was caused by magnesium deficiency.

The application of magnesium fertilizer could be corrected, and it could promote the turning green, increase the number of effective panicles, increase the seed setting rate, and increase the grain weight so as to increase the average yield of rice by 11.8%.
