Potassium nitrate supply situation

The global annual production capacity of potassium nitrate is over 4 million tons, mainly produced by countries such as Chile, Israel, and China. At present, China has become one of the world's major producers of potassium nitrate. With the continuous maturity of large-scale industrial production conditions in China, the production capacity of potassium nitrate has been significantly increased, and the supply and demand situation in the Chinese market has undergone fundamental changes. In recent years, due to factors such as tobacco cultivation, fireworks manufacturing, and the epidemic, the growth of potassium nitrate in China has been sluggish. In 2021, the total domestic production was around 742400 tons.

There are more than 50 potassium nitrate production enterprises in China, with an annual production capacity of over 2 million tons, accounting for about 50% of the global production capacity, making it the country with the largest proportion of production capacity. Among them, Qinghai Salt Lake Nitrate Industry Co., Ltd. and Zhejiang Lianda Chemical Co., Ltd. are the main large-scale potassium nitrate production enterprises in China. However, overall, there are still gaps between China's potassium nitrate enterprises and developed countries in terms of production scale, product quality, equipment progress, and technology integration.

Import and Export Analysis

In recent years, China's potassium nitrate exports have significantly shrunk, which is still a gap from the historical high. According to customs statistics, in 2021, China exported 42000 tons of potassium nitrate, a year-on-year decrease of 59.73%, with an export amount of 32.82 million US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 51.59%. In terms of exports, Southeast Asia and South Asia have always been China's traditional export markets. In 2021, potassium nitrate was mainly exported to Japan, India, South Korea, Australia, and other regions.

China is a net exporter of potassium nitrate, with a relatively small import volume. In 2015, the import volume was 23000 tons, but then it plummeted to below 10000 tons. In 2021, the import volume of potassium nitrate was 1522 tons. Currently, the potassium nitrate products produced by domestic enterprises can meet the majority of domestic demand, and the import volume remains at a relatively low level.
