Magnesium oxide is a white amorphous powder. It is odorless, tasteless and non-toxic. The relative density is about 3.58 (25 C). The melting point is 2852 C and the boiling point is 3600 C. It is insoluble in water, alcohol and acid or ammonium salt solutions. It can be transformed into crystals by burning at high temperature above 1000 C. When the temperature rises above 1500 (?) C, it will become dead burnt magnesia or sintered magnesia. When exposed to carbon dioxide in the air, basic magnesium carbonate is formed.
Usage: Magnesium oxide is used for making ceramics, enamels, refractory crucibles and refractory bricks. Magnesium oxide cement can be prepared by mixing with magnesium chloride and other solutions as polishing agent, binder, filler for paint and paper, accelerator and activator for chloroprene rubber. Pharmaceutically, it is used as an antacid and laxative, for hyperacidity of stomach and ulcer of stomach and duodenum. It is also used in glass, dyes, phenolic plastics, etc. Food grade is used as decolorizer in sand refining and pH regulation of ice cream powder.

High-purity magnesium oxide process: using brine as the main raw material, ammonia or alkali as precipitator, first made magnesium hydroxide, then calcined and decomposed into magnesium oxide. At present, magnesium oxide produced by ammonia process should be more than 99% with Qinghai halogen grains or other hydrous magnesium chloride as the main raw materials, and the large-scale production technology of magnesium oxide should be mature.
