Potassium Nitrate As Preservative

Abstract

The application effect of several common household-cut flower preservation reagents (copper sulfate, potassium nitrate, salt, sugar, and vitamin C) on Gladiolus hybridusvat Nemenna was studied. Through comprehensive evaluation of morphological and physiological indicators, it was found that the water treatment of 3g of potassium nitrate + 20 g of sucrose + 1 L was ideal.

Conclusion

Due to the multiple effects of sucrose on cut gladiolus flowers, it can timely replenish the energy required for cutting branches, improve the nutritional status of cut flowers, and promote the life activities of cut flowers. However, in the treatment of P3 and P5, it is mainly affected by the inhibition of Cu2. Potassium nitrate as preservative is a good choice; in the formula P4 added with potassium nitrate, because l<10 can increase the osmotic pressure of solution and the tension of petal cells, it is conducive to water balance, thus maintaining the posture of flowers. In addition to the interaction of sucrose, P4 treatment has the highest ornamental value.

1) Copper sulfate, due to its high concentration, not only cannot increase its ornamental value but also has a toxic effect on cut flowers.

2) Potassium ions from potassium nitrate as preservative can increase the osmotic pressure of solution and the tension of petal cells, which is conducive to water balance and maintaining flower posture and greatly improves the ornamental value of cut gladiolus flowers.

3) Fresh weight is determined by both the evapotranspiration rate and the absorption rate. When the two are equal, the fresh weight reaches its maximum. The increase in fresh weight, to some extent, prolongs the senescence of cut flowers.

4) Through comprehensive evaluation of morphological and physiological indicators, formula P4: 3g potassium nitrate + 20 g sucrose + 1 l water treatment is an ideal formula for the preservation of cut gladiolus flowers.
